Can You Be Mayor And…?

I’ve been getting this question a lot lately. Can you be mayor and still teach? Can you be mayor and still coach?

Because Montpelier has a Mayor-City Manager system, our City Manager (Bill Fraser) runs the day-to-day operations of the city. He manages personnel and is the city’s head administrator. City Manager is a full-time job.

By contrast, the mayor is a part time job that makes $3000/year. The mayor’s key roles are to run city council meetings, be a spokesperson for the city, and ensure that our finances are being managed well, which is primarily done through the budget process.

So yes, I’ll continue to teach physics, engineering, and math at Montpelier High School, but I may cut back on the coaching. I’m already in the process of finding additional coaching help for the boys ultimate team.

Municipal Food For Thought

Let’s Talk Progress, an organization out of Burlington, VT has brought in some really interesting speakers. Here are two of my favorites.

Svante Myrick, mayor of Ithaca, NY talks nuts and bolts of improving his city.

Joe Minicozzi talks about how our current property tax structure encourages big box stores and how we can think about property taxes differently.
